Day 1: Arrive any time today in St. John’s, Newfoundland. We’ll meet in the evening for a group dinner at the Alt Hotel to get to know each other and to discuss our upcoming photo tour.
Day 2: Cape Spear Sunrise
We start our tour photographing the most easterly location in North America at sunrise. At Cape Spear we can photograph the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland; the location is designated a National Historic Site of Canada. The original lighthouse building, and the light-keeper’s residence has been restored to the period of 1839. We will be there to catch the sunrise, which will be something that will stay with you forever.
While we wait and watch the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean we usually hear the sound of humpback whales blowing in the ocean next to the rugged cliffs.
During the day we will also visit Jellybean Row houses where you can capture all the brilliant colours of downtown St. John’s. Each street in historic St. John’s has a unique character and provides great photographic opportunities. We will show you the hidden and behind-the-scenes photo locations as well.
During our trip we will also visit the south side hills where you can capture pictures of The Battery, which is a favourite for photographers. From here we can explore Fort Amherst and get some great pictures of the old lighthouse that greets passengers as they enter St. John’s harbour. We will also make other stops along the way which include Quidi Vidi, Petty Harbour, Signal Hill, and many more.
Day 3: Cape St Mary’s
Today we visit Cape St. Mary’s, one of the largest northern gannet nesting sites in North America (around 30, 000). Cape St. Mary’s is also home to many other birds that include, thick-billed murres, black-legged kittiwakes, common murre, razorbills, black guillemots, ravens, bald eagles and many more.
While Cape St. Mary’s is known for its wildlife the rugged cliffs on which these birds nest makes for a scenic landscape image as well. During our travels to and from Cape St. Mary’s we will also make several stops along the way to photograph small communities in outport Newfoundland.
Day 4 to 6: Bonavista
After breakfast we will depart from St. John’s for our accommodations in Bonavista, our new home for the next three nights.
Over the next three days we will photograph many amazing locations and a large selection of wildlife. The focus while travelling the northeast coast of Newfoundland will be to capture images of whales, puffins, coastal villages, and the rugged coastlines. The scenic northeast coast provides great opportunities to take stunning pictures of the dramatic cliffs and seascapes.
We will visit many picturesque communities such as Trinity where we will have an opportunity to photograph an old fishing community. Trinity had abundant room for the ships of the day and shores well suited for outbuildings, wharves, and fish-flakes. Historically, Trinity was an ideal location for the migratory fishery. During the 1720s, Trinity was home to about 30 permanent families and hosted 200-300 seasonal fishermen per year. By 1869, the population peaked at more than 800 people. While in Trinity you can photograph the old architecture such as fishing stages and colourful houses.
We will also visit Elliston and photograph the Atlantic puffin colony. Here we will offer tips on how to get up close to get those award-winning pictures. Other places we will visit include Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, Dungeons, Cable John Cove, Tickle Cove, and many more.
To get closer and whales and other Atlantic wildlife, two zodiac boat tours are included in the cost and highly recommended. The best way to capture award-winning wildlife images is from these zodiac adventures.
During our time in Bonavista, photo times will be selected based on weather, sea conditions and other factor which will help us get the best images possible.
Day 7: Back St. John’s
This morning we’ll start our trip back to St. John’s, stopping for lunch and photography along the way.
Day 8: Flight’s home can be scheduled at any time this day.

St. John's
Visit all the best places in the St. John's area. Some place we will visit include, Signal Hill, Cape Spear, Jelly Bean Houses, Quidi Vidi and more.
They maybe requested and arranged based on tour or workshop being attended.
The sooner you are able to make your booking, the better. We have no way of knowing when other people will book, so by the time you decide to confirm your place, it may be that the tour is already filled up! Our advice is to book as soon as you’ve made the decision to travel.
We highly recommend travel insurance which include cancellation insurance.
However, we understand that attending one of our tours/workshops requires commitment and things can happen in life that may force you to cancel.
• Greater than 150 days before the workshop start date – full refund of any payments made.
• 150-91 days before the start of the workshop – 75% of tour cost refunded
• Within 90 days of the start of the workshop – No refund.
No matter when you cancel if we can fill your space in the workshop or tour, we will provide a 100% refund. Tours or bookings are also transferable to other people.
All refunds will be made by the same method of the original payment.
The arrival of icebergs to the shores on Newfoundland are unpredictable every season. However, though years of experience chasing icebergs the best chance to photograph them is early May until Mid-June.
Puffins start to appear in early May and the late departure puffins leave around late September. However, the best time to photograph puffins is at the beginning of June to end of August.
