Incredible images and insights: custom photo tour of Newfoundland
My recent 3-day photography tour of St. John’s and Eastern Newfoundland was a wonderful and authentic experience, providing amazing opportunities for photography and more.
As a fully customized tour, the very personable, professional photographer Michael Winsor and I had a few calls beforehand to go over possible opportunities and subjects to shoot during the days of the tour, as well as advice to prepare for the trip. In line with the opportunities of the season, we travelled around by vehicle quite comfortably, with a central aim to shoot icebergs from different angles, while making stops, both planned and impromptu, along the way. We captured images in iconic but also lesser-known locations, from Bonavista to St. John’s across the Narrows at night time to other discoveries such as sea ice churned up by powerful waves in tiny fishing villages. Michael made great suggestions, adapting to whatever came up and optimizing the situations while keeping my interests in mind. He was more than willing to ensure attempts for the best potential light and conditions, including sunrises and sunsets, despite the cold and windy weather that we happened to be facing.
Michael is a celebrated landscape and wildlife photographer, with deep knowledge of and connection to Newfoundland (I encourage you to have a look at his stunning work!). I learned a great deal from him during these three days, not only upgrading my own skills due to his technical and practical advice, but also getting more acquainted with icebergs and wildlife, Newfoundland history, culture, stories and more. All the while, the road trip was full of laughs and in good company.
Beyond the amazing photography opportunities and tips to improve my game, it was a firsthand introduction to Newfoundland and provided local encounters and hospitality around that I had hoped for and deeply appreciate. Highly recommended.
